Southern California may be interested in hiring LSU defensive line coach Ed Orgeron.
USC coach Clay Helton, who had his interim label removed today, is “good friends” with Orgeron and may be considering him for USC’s staff, according to FootballScoop.com.
Orgeron has plenty of history with USC. He served as the interim head coach following Lane Kiffin’s firing in 2013 after serving as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator from 2010-13. Orgeron also had an earlier stint with the Trojans from 1998-2004.
Orgeron landed at LSU a year after leaving USC before its bowl game in 2013. He was widely beloved by his players but was told he would not return as the permanent coach. He has served as LSU’s defensive line coach for one season.
This isn’t the first coaching gig Orgeron has been connected with. A report from Syracuse.com’s Bud Poliquin suggested that Orgeron expressed enthusiasm in the Syracuse vacancy.
