In an offseason where LSU is set to compete for the biggest names in football coaching circles, the Tigers can cross one heavyweight program off its list of competition.
In a report from Matt Fortuna at ESPN.com, Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said Kelly is safe and “will lead this team out of the tunnel opening day next year.”
Kelly fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder this season and there have been rumblings of descent with the players, especially after Kelly’s criticisms about them to the media.
The Irish are 2-5 this season and return to action next week against Miami. Kelly signed a six-year contract extension in the offseason.
LSU, meanwhile, will have one less suitor for top names as it searches for a permanent replacement for Les Miles, who was fired last month. Interim coach Ed Orgeron is believed to be a candidate to take over on a full-time basis.
