It takes a certain type of person to be a college football coach. They have to be dedicated, passionate, intelligent, and sometimes a little off the wall.
Ed Orgeron showcased the latter last season during a pregame hype speech against Arkansas with an 11 a.m. kickoff, according to Michael Casagrande of AL.com.
It wasn’t just yelling or screaming, it was actual physical abuse. Except it was only against himself.
“He walked in there and said it’s time to set your jaw,” said former Tiger offensive lineman K.J. Malone. “And started punching himself in the jaw.”
Center Will Clapp relayed the same message and former offensive lineman Toby Weathersby also confirmed the story. That’s certainly one way to wake up in the morning.
Then again, it’s not that suprising for Orgeron, whose energy level has been known to go off the charts thanks to the insane amount of energy drinks he reportedly takes in every single day.
He once wanted to fight a reporter over reporting injuries when he was at Ole Miss and folk lore says he even once challenged players to a fight.
While it’s not that eye-opening that Orgeron would choose to strike himself in the jaw, it’s certainly not worth a shoulder shrug either. It is, however, something nobody would put it past him to do.
