BATON ROUGE, La. — The 2017 LSU football season gave us electric offensive showings and stifling defensive performances. But only 10 plays could make SEC Country’s countdown of the top LSU plays of 2017.
But at No. 8, we focus on special teams. Namely, one of the most memorable kicks in modern LSU football history. However you slice it, LSU’s win over Auburn was a defining moment of SEC football in 2017. It signified the Tigers’ return to prominence after an ugly loss to Troy, and Auburn seemed to use it as a spark to propel it toward winning the SEC West.

And it wouldn’t have happened if not for the clutch kicking of Connor Culp. Here’s No. 8 on the countdown.
Set the scene: LSU was mounting a comeback. The Tigers trailed Auburn by as many as 20 points in the first half, but with time running out in the fourth quarter, they’d cut the lead to 2 points. Which led to much-maligned kicker Culp lining up for the boot of his life.
Shaded slightly left of the center of the field, Culp squared up the ball and knocked it 42 yards through the uprights, pushing the kick a little to his right but evenly through the goalposts. LSU had its first lead of the ball game and No. 10 Auburn was backed up where it didn’t want to be.
Almost exactly 2 minutes of game time later, Culp lined up for another kick, this one from 36 yards out. Once again, Culp was perfect. The Tigers’ lead expanded to 27-23, exactly where it’d stay when the clock hit double zeroes.
These were the kicks that won LSU its biggest résumé game of 2017. But they weren’t the only plays from the Auburn game you’ll see on our countdown. That’s for certain.
Check back with SEC Country throughout the next two weeks as we continue our countdown of the top LSU football plays of 2017.
