On the same night star tailback Leonard Fournette broke LSU’s single-season rushing record against Texas A&M, his backup put on a show of his own under the lights at Tiger Stadium.
Freshman Derrius Guice made a pair of incredible plays that helped spark what had through two quarters been a sluggish Tigers offense. First, on the opening kickoff of the second half, Guice broke eight tackles — yes, you’re reading that right — on a 74-yard kickoff return that will likely go down as one of the season’s best runs. He shook off a pair of defenders, spun out of another’s grasp and then wove his way through traffic before finally being brought down by Aggies kicker Taylor Bertolet (of all players).
Later in the third quarter, Guice broke free for a 50-yard rushing touchdown that gave LSU the lead, 13-7.
Whether Les Miles or another coach is manning the helm at LSU next season, he’ll have not one, but two amazingly talented ball-carriers at his disposal.
