Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the Georgia Bulldogs had 57 players on active rosters, trailing only Alabama’s 62. From 2020 to 2024, Georgia produced 49 NFL draft picks, the most of any college football program. Alabama was second at 48.
In that same time period, the Dawgs won two national titles. And now, No. 4 Georgia (10-1) will close out another extremely successful regular season. UGA will then look ahead to the SEC championship and the College Football Playoff.
At the same time, one former UGA great is running away with the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award.
A Dawg has not taken home the league’s highest honor since Terrell Davis ran for 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns in 1998. Davis capped off the season by winning Super Bowl XXXII, where he was named the game’s MVP.
Bulldog legend Todd Gurley came close in 2017, finishing 2nd in voting behind Tom Brady. Gurley was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year for his 2,000+ scrimmage-yard and 19-touchdown season.
But this may finally be the year that a Dawg brings it home. At 37 years old, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is having the greatest run of his 17-year career and is currently the front-runner for NFL MVP.
Stafford is now a heavy favorite to win NFL MVP at -220 on FanDuel. The Georgia legend also has the Rams sitting atop the Super Bowl board, with Los Angeles carrying the league’s best odds at +430.
Current NFL MVP Odds, via FanDuel:
- Matthew Stafford, QB, Los Angeles Rams, –220
- Drake Maye, QB, New England Patriots, +220
- Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts, +2000
- Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills, +2000
- Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs, +2000
Entering Week 13 of the 2025 season, Matthew Stafford has led the Rams to a league-best 9–2 record and is putting up massive production. The Dallas, Texas, native has thrown for 30 touchdowns with only two interceptions on 373 pass attempts.
And while a couple of other quarterbacks have only one interception, they’ve done it on far lighter workloads — Jalen Hurts with 308 attempts and Justin Fields with 204. Given the volume Stafford is carrying, it’s only natural he’d have one or two more throws go the other way, and his interception rate remains among the league’s best for a high-usage quarterback.
After being traded from the Detroit Lions in 2021, the DGD won Super Bowl LVI in his first season leading the Rams.
The UGA gunslinger of the past played under coach Mark Richt from 2006-2008 and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions.
Stafford took over as Georgia’s starting quarterback immediately after DJ Shockley and held the job for three seasons. Over that span, he steadily developed each year, finishing his career with 7,731 passing yards on 57.1 percent passing, 51 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions. He also added 213 rushing yards and six rushing scores. Stafford guided the Bulldogs to three consecutive bowl victories — the Chick-fil-A Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Capital One Bowl.
Impressive doesn’t begin to describe currently playing this good when most UGA fans under the age of 18 weren’t alive when he donned the red & black.
