Don’t count FS1’s Colin Cowherd among those jumping on the Dak Prescott hype train after his first preseason game.
After watching Prescott go 10-for-12 passing for 139 yards in the Cowboys’ exhibition loss against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, Cowherd hopped on Twitter and was dismayed by what he saw, he said during Monday’s edition of The Herd.
All of a sudden, I go on Twitter and people are just like, ‘Oh, my God. Can you believe this?’ Folks. A lot of guys can do an interesting segment on radio. Try going to three hours in August. Nice series or two, Dak Prescott. I’m not building my franchise around a guy that got a DUI before the combine and last year got beaten over the head with a beer bottle at a party. Seventy-five percent of being a franchise QB in this league isn’t talent; it’s being Teddy Bridgewater mature, Matt Ryan mature, Eli Manning mature, Tom Brady mature.
Never mind that the party Cowherd referred to wasn’t actually a party, but rather a Waka Flocka Flame concert. Nor did Prescott do anything to provoke the attack; the police report described him as “the victim.”
Although Prescott was charged with DUI, he later was found not guilty. Two Breathalyzer tests were inconclusive. It’s possible the arrest affected Prescott’s draft stock. The Mississippi State product fell to the Cowboys in the fourth round, despite leading the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record as a senior, throwing for 3,793 yards and 29 touchdowns with five interceptions.
Cowherd continued, even inciting Johnny Football:
Why’d I say I liked Teddy Bridgewater last year? Not because he’s a great athlete. Because I made two calls to NFL GMs, who said, “Grown up,” “never in trouble,” “move the chains.” People will show you who they are. Believe them. Cowboy fans, you also wanted Johnny Manziel. What did I tell you? He’s not a grown-up. I’ve got nothing against Dak Prescott. Dak Prescott got a DUI before the combine, the most important week of his life, he got a DUI. The year before he got beat over the head, got into a fight at some frat party. That’s who you want to build around? Cowboys, that’s why you’re the Cowboys.
