Apparently, former Mississippi State defensive lineman Chris Jones envisions himself as a Cam Newton-like presence at quarterback. That is, if he’s ever given the chance to show his stuff behind center.
Jones, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, had a playful message for reporters Monday, as captured in this video by The Kansas City Star. He says he’s capable of being like 3 former great SEC quarterbacks: Newton, Dak Prescott and Tim Tebow. Pretty fantastic.
Check out what he told reporters below.
“Cam Newton. Dak Prescott. Tim Tebow. Did I say I was going to be that? It’s just a matter of time. You’ve got to wait. You just can’t rush greatness, baby. I’m going to be out there doing a little Cam Newton, dropping it back. But, you know, we’ll see. We will see. … I’m dead serious about this Cam Newton, Tim Tebow thing. I need to get it in the end zone and make it happen.”
Of course, Chiefs coach Andy Reid likely disagrees with this creative take. Jones is 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, so it’s hard to envision the player being nimble in the pocket. And watching him throw would be a sight, for sure.
Still, Jones can show his value on the defensive line. After being drafted 37th overall in 2016, he had 28 tackles and 2 sacks in the regular season last year. The Chiefs will count on him to make an impact, especially after 2-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dontari Poe signed with the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason.
Points to Jones for the laughs.
