Mississippi State has apparently zeroed in on a new target for its defensive coordinator opening.
Paul Rhoads is expected to be in Starkville, Miss., on Sunday but no deal is done yet, sources told FootballScoop.
Rhoads, 48, was recently fired by Iowa State, where he had been the head coach since 2009. He previously was a position coach at the school from 1995-99 before stints as Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator (2000-07) and Auburn’s defensive coordinator (2008).
Dan Mullen is on the search for a new defensive coordinator after Manny Diaz left Mississippi State took the same position at Miami under former UGA coach Mark Richt.
The first candidate to surface for the position was LSU defensive line coach Ed Orgeron, who reportedly will remain with the Tigers and could be in the mix for an extension.
