The casual fan wouldn’t expect there to be much history between Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech, but there will definitely be some familiarity Saturday.
Mississippi State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, who is in his second stint with the Bulldogs, was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech during the 2014 season. Although Diaz downplayed that his knowledge of Louisiana Tech’s defense would have any impact on the game, he did admit both offenses have an unusual advantage.
“I think the familiarity that both offenses will have is from practicing stylistically against the same defense,” Diaz told reporters on Tuesday. “That will be interesting to see how that works out as the game goes on.”
Diaz was the Mississippi State defensive coordinator in 2010 but left to take the same position at Texas in 2011. After three seasons with the Longhorns, Diaz spent 2014 with Louisiana Tech.
Of course, fans cannot forget the other similarity shared between the two football teams … both squads are nicknamed the Bulldogs.
