LaDarrius Bishop, an Ashdown (Ark.) High School 2018 cornerback, committed Saturday afternoon to Mississippi State. He chose the Bulldogs over Arkansas and Oklahoma State.
Bishop (6-foot, 205 pounds) is a 3-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite ratings. He is the No. 5 recruit in the 2018 class from Arkansas. The Bulldogs have 16 commitments in the class. Bishop is the second cornerback and fourth defensive back.
Speed is considered Bishop’s best attribute. Also a standout sprinter in track, he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at a Mississippi State camp earlier this summer. Healso plays wide receiver and is a kick returner.
“He has a different gear,” Ashdown coach Matt Richardson told SEC Country last month. “There’s times we’ll throw the ball up, it looks like it’s overthrown and there’s another gear that kicks in. He’s one of those kind of players that has extra in the tank and they know they can go get it.
“He can go get somebody on defense when he needs to or he can make something big happen on offense when it needs to happen.”
Mississippi State moved Bishop to the top of its priority list at defense back after his performance at the Bulldogs camp. Arkansas, however, remained the favorite until recently. The Razorbacks have two cornerbacks committed in the class and did not have a pressing need for a third.
Arkansas 2017 safety signee Montaric Brown, also from Ashdown, is Bishop’s cousin. The two are close friends and had previously expressed a desire to play together again. It’s unclear if Arkansas was willing to take Bishop as a third cornerback commit. Either way, Mississippi State closed strong to land his pledge.
Bishop recently spoke extensively with Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen about his possible role with the Bulldogs.
“He sat down with Mullen the other day by himself and he asked him how many DBs he had, what he’s going to do for him outside of football and how he’s going to make me a better person,” Richardson said.
