Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead signed his first recruiting class with the Bulldogs on Wednesday, filling out a class that began back in December.
Moorhead signed several future potential stars, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Here’s what he had to say after the dust had settled on Mississippi State’s National Signing Day:
On recruiting in the south:
“I think our commitment to the state has been tremendous. We have 13 kids committed from in-state. One service had us getting six of the top 10 ranked players in the state, so that’s been tremendous. I think we have a lot of guys on our staff from different places, but a lot with significant Southeastern Conference ties. The reception on the road has been fantastic because I think the coaches understand our commitment to the players.”
On adjusting to expectations:
“I’ve been adjusting great. The recruiting class hasn’t been the only thing expanding, my waist line is getting a lot bigger too with all the great food down here. All the barbecue and fried catfish, my belts been loosened a few notches. But coach Mullen did a fantastic job with the program, he laid an excellent foundation. And our challenge as the new coaching staff is to elevate from good to great. Our thought process is we want to be a team that can win SEC Championships and National Championships … We’re not going to insult this institution or this state with low expectations.
On the top-tier offensive players in this class:
“We’re very excited about it, and I think that was part of the thing coming into the job. There were a number of players already committed who fit our system and our scheme. You mentioned (quarterback Jalen Mayden), he’s a great player who can beat you with his brains, his arm and his legs. A bunch of good receivers and tight ends and a great running back out of the state of Alabama, and obviously it all starts up front. The mentality of our team will be dictated by the offensive and defensive lines. But certainly the guys we’re bringing in are all going to have the opportunity to compete, and they’re all good fits for what we want to do offensively.”
