Perhaps the biggest question on the minds of Mississippi State fans as fall camps open around the SEC is who will replace record-setting quarterback Dak Prescott under center this season?
Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen has already predicted a prolonged competition for the job saying it might take until October for one of the four players competing for the job to firmly take hold of the position. But each team has to start somewhere and Mullen opened camp Tuesday with redshirt sophomore Nick Fitzgerald listed atop the depth chart, Paul Jones at 247Sports reporteed.
Fitzgerald downplayed the significance of his place on the depth chart telling reporters Tuesday that he won a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors with redshirt junior Damian Williams to determine who took the first snaps of camp.
Williams is next on the depth chart followed by redshirt sophomore Elijah Staley, and redshirt freshman Nick Tiano. These players could juggle the starting job multiple times in the coming weeks and months based on Mullen’s feelings going into camp. So this really just seems like a jumping off point.
Maybe Fitzgerald will prove his coach wrong.
