Nick Fitzgerald is receiving some Heisman Trophy buzz after Mississippi State crushed LSU on Saturday.
On Sunday, Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman released his top 5 Heisman Trophy contenders, and the Bulldogs quarterback cracked the list at No. 5. Others included are Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and Oregon running back Royce Freeman.
Check out what Feldman had to say about Fitzgerald in his column:
5. Nick Fitzgerald, Mississippi State, QB: Dan Mullen developed a heck of a QB in Dak Prescott and he’s doing it again with the 6’5”, 230-pound junior. Fitzgerald was fantastic as the Bulldogs walloped a good LSU defense in a 37-7 blowout. Fitzgerald doesn’t put up the gaudy passing stats that some college quarterbacks do, but it’s his total game that is so impressive. He’s thrown for seven TDs (and just one INT), but the really eye-opening stuff is when you add in five rushing TDs and 240 yards on the ground.
You can understand why Fitzgerald would be featured in this group. He was stellar in throwing for 180 yards with 2 touchdowns against the Tigers. He also ran for 88 yards with 2 touchdowns in the rout.
Fitzgerald will have plenty more chances to impress in the month ahead, with interesting road games against Georgia and Auburn looming in the next two weeks.
If he continues with the impressive production, he should be considered a serious contender for the Heisman Trophy.
