BATON ROUGE, La. — Mississippi State’s trip to a conference road game at LSU was, to say the least, an adventure.
The Bulldogs were supposed to fly to Baton Rouge, but their plane was grounded because the de-icing machine was out of order. That led to State taking a bus from Starkville. What is normally a 5-hour trip was made much longer by the road conditions in an unusual Southern ice storm.
It was on that stretch of Interstate 55 that the team witnessed a car flying off the road and flipping into a ditch. Coach Ben Howland and strength coach David Deets made their way to the car to help the driver escape, while at the same time State’s bus driver moved the rest of the team out of harm’s way.
Howland recalled the scary scene after the Bulldogs’ 95-78 win over LSU on Saturday afternoon.
