Mississippi State lost a close one to BYU last week, but if the Cougars had tried what they attempted Thursday night, the Bulldogs might have won.
In the second quarter of its game against Boise State, BYU was facing 4th-and-19 from its own 5-yard line. What’s the logical play there? Fake punt out of your own end zone, obviously.
This is the worst fake punt of all time. End of discussion. pic.twitter.com/oa6exx8RBB

It wasn’t even a pass. The Cougars tried to cover the full 19 yards, not counting the distance between the punter and the line of scrimmage at the snap, on the ground. It ended terribly, with BYU punter Johnny Linehan losing 3 yards on the play.
Had BYU attempted that at any point against Mississippi State, the Bulldogs probably would have scored and been able to keep the game from going to overtime, where they lost 28-21.
Then again, maybe not. After getting the ball on BYU’s 2-yard line, Boise State lost 11 yards on the ensuing drive and missed a field goal.
