2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Ole Miss is ranked (Week 2)

After an early scare when Ole Miss was trailing UT Martin, Matt Luke’s squad eventually pulled through for a 45-23 victory at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday. But was it enough to impress the SEC Country Power Poll voters?

Apparently, there’s some work to be done, as Ole Miss placed No. 12 in our second power poll of the season. Ole Miss ranked directly behind Vanderbilt.

The Rebels were only up 17-16 at halftime before taking control with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson completed 32 of 43 passes for 489 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. A.J. Brown impressed again with 8 catches for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns.

After the game, UT Martin coach Jason Simpson was impressed with the Rebels’ ability.

“When they play zone, of course they can run around and make a couple plays and stuff,” he said. “You have to pick your poison and decide what they are going to do. I am sure people were yelling at us to blitz them, but then they had a couple fade balls that they got us on. It just didn’t match up.”

Luke’s road now gets somewhat tougher as his team faces three straight road games, Cal, Alabama and Auburn. A few wins in that stretch certainly would help the Rebels move up in the SEC Country Power Poll. Luke knows the Rebels will need to improve.

“The magic isn’t in the scheme,” he said. “The magic is in the effort from our third quarters. I want us to look better.”

SEC Country’s Power Poll, consisting of 27 voters, placed Alabama in the No. 1 spot, where the Crimson Tide were all last season.

Here’s a look at how the rest of the league filed in behind the Crimson Tide in the post-Week 2 version of the poll:
