It’s no secret that Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly is the nephew of Bills’ legendary quarterback Jim Kelly. His aunt, however, isn’t usually mentioned alongside him.
That all changed on Monday when Jill Kelly, Jim’s wife, wrote a tear-jerking message to her nephew on Instagram. The message sat under a photo of Chad and said they’re loving and praying for him to recover quickly.
My nephew, Chad’s amazing college football career at Ole Miss ended a few weeks ago when he injured his ACL. He had surgery today and everything went well, thank God. Now, the recovery process begins. Our family would appreciate it if you would pray for Chad… Sometimes setbacks are set ups for God to do immeasurably more than we could ever imagine. We are believing and hoping that Chad will come back from this momentary pause for healing – stronger and more focused than he ever was…able to play the game he loves with even greater passion, precision and professionalism. We love you and we are praying for you #10.
Kelly will need to make a quick recovery if he wants to work out for teams prior to the NFL Draft in April. UCLA linebacker Myles Jack experienced a similar issue with his knee this past year and slipped slightly in the draft because of it.
The Kelly family has already experienced their fair share of heartbreak. Jim’s son, Hunter, died at the age of 8 in 2005 after a battle with Krabbe Disease. Jim himself was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 but later beat the disease before it came back and he beat it again.
Chad has also had his own issues off the field. He was dismissed from Clemson and transferred to East Mississippi Community College, where he won an NJCAA national title before enrolling at Ole Miss.
