A New York agency has begun development of a movie chronicling the relationship between Chucky Mullins and Brad Gaines, Alison James of the Franklin County Times reports.
The story is well-known to Ole Miss and Vanderbilt fans. It was told in several ways first in a ESPN report below and then in the SEC Stories film, It’s Time.
Mullins was paralyzed while trying to make a tackle on a kickoff. The impact with Gaines, shattered four vertebrae. He was in the hospital for the rest of his life. Gaines, a Vanderbilt fullback, visited him in the hospital and developed a friendship.
Gaines now takes care of Mullins’ grave site, cleaning it on three specific days — the day the injury occurred, the day Mullins died and Christmas — in honor of his friend.
That friendship will be the driving force of the film. It is currently being compared to having a similar uplifting tone to Remember the Titans. The movie is in very early stages of development.
Ole Miss honors Mullins each spring in awarding his No. 38 jersey to the player that embodies Mullins courage and spirit.
The story should make for a gut-wrenching movie as the story continues to get spread to a wider audience.
