A large Mississippi state flag was confiscated from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium last Saturday.
According to the Oxford Eagle’s Alex McDaniel, it was assumed that the flag belonged to a few Ole Miss fans, who were advocating the replacement of the state flag on Ole Miss’ campus.
It turns out that the flag actually belonged to Mississippi State fan, Steve Miller, who was taking in the Rebels’ contest. McDaniel reports that Miller is a member of the “Delta Flaggers,’ an organization dedicated to defending the state flag.
A picture of Miller carrying the flag out of the Ole Miss Athletics building surfaced on Thursday, as pointed out by the Oxford Eagle.
The Ole Miss student government voted to remove the state flag from campus in 2015, but no public university in Mississippi flies the flag.
According to Miller, sticks, poles and large banner haven’t allowed in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since 1997 in an effort to prevent fans from waving the confederate flag at football games.
