Deep breaths, Rebels fans.
According to a report from David Johnson of the Ole Miss Spirit, Thad Matta is on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford today, fueling plenty of Twitter activity that he could be a candidate or the candidate to replace Andy Kennedy, who resigned from his post as head basketball coach last month.
Here’s a sampling of Rebels Twitter trying to contain its excitement about the possibility of Matta leading Ole Miss on the court.
If he’s healthy enough, HIRE THAD MATTA TODAY.

If Ole Miss can hire Thad Matta, that'd be beyond impressive

Thad Matta would be a home run hire IMO. https://t.co/5QIbwNAoWx

This would be a SUPERB hire if Ole Miss can get Thad Matta. Health is really the only question. Thad can coach & recruit with anyone. https://t.co/bjp7Meg3jp

If true, I'd just be mostly stunned that anyone in Oxford would recognize Thad Matta.

Matta last coached at Ohio State, where he spent 13 seasons. He led the Buckeyes to a total of nine Big Ten Championships and two Final Four appearances as well as helping to develop a number of lottery and first-round picks in the NBA draft.
Matta and Ohio State parted ways last summer, with Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith concerned about his level of recruiting and Matta concerned about his health.
The Rebels close out their regular season on Saturday against Vanderbilt at 8:30 p.m. ET from Oxford.
