A sad piece of news for fans of Ole Miss athletics: Former Rebels basketball star Justin Reed, who since at least July was courageously battling a form on cancer in his spine, passed away Friday morning, according to the Ole Miss Spirit.
He was 35 years old.
Reed had an incredible career on the court in Oxford. He was an All-SEC selection all four years of his college career and a candidate for the prestigious Wooden Award twice.
During his freshman season, Reed led the Rebels to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, and in his senior season his 18.5 points per game led the SEC.
He ranks sixth all-time in scoring at Ole Miss with 1,785 points and ninth in rebounding with 766.
The Celtics drafted Reed in 2004, and his NBA career included time with Boston, the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves.
