What a week this is shaping up to be for former Ole Miss baseball player Zack Cozart.
First, he was voted into his first MLB All-Star Game as the starting shortstop in the National League. And now, the Cincinnati Reds’ breakout star is receiving a donkey as a reward.
And yes, that is actually a reward Cozart wanted.
Reds first baseman Joey Votto promised Cozart that if the shortstop made the All-Star Game this year, he would buy his teammate the donkey he has always wanted. Now that Cozart is headed to the Midsummer Classic on July 11 in Miami, that dream is going to become a reality.
Votto is reportedly already in touch with his donkey dealer.
“He doesn’t have a phone. He only uses a pager,” Votto said, per Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “He’s kind of in that black market business. He’ll see it’s time to bring that donkey to Cincinnati.”
Cozart is certainly deserving of any reward he sees fit. The Reds shortstop is hitting .322 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs this season.
Cozart played at Ole Miss from 2005-07, hitting .310 over three seasons.
