Perhaps the best quarterback on the Denver Broncos roster is neither Trevor Siemian nor Paxton Lynch.
ESPN’s Bill Polian seems to think so. During Wednesday’s episode of “NFL Live,” Polian hailed “Mr. Irrelevant,” Chad Kelly, as the most talented quarterback on Denver’s roster.
“By the way, in the bullpen is Chad Kelly, who is more talented than either of these two guys, but has a lot of growing up to do,” Polian said.
Show host Dianna Russini promptly followed up asking Polian to clarify whether he thought Kelly was more talented than Siemian and Lynch. Polian emphasized from that a talent standpoint, Kelly is the best quarterback on the roster.
The only problem is Kelly is recovering from a torn ACL and a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee suffered in November. Kelly also has his fair share of off-field baggage, which certainly played a role in his fall to the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
But there’s no doubting Kelly’s potential. He threw for 4,042 yards and 31 touchdowns during a breakout 2015 campaign and had thrown for 2,758 yards and 19 touchdowns before the injury occurred.
Kelly likely won’t factor into Denver’s plans at quarterback for the 2017 season. But Polian also offered some speculation that could give the edge to Siemian in the upcoming training camp battle.
“Now, Siemian is a game manager,” Polian said. “He will do a good job with that.”
Given coach Vance Joseph’s defensive background, a game manager might be all he needs under center. But Lynch could provide more appealing upside and that shouldn’t be diminished.
