Ole Miss has now added another piece to its 2016 recruiting class, as four-star tight end Octavious Cooley has officially signed with the Rebels, the school announced Wednesday.
Cooley is the No. 6 tight end in the nation, the No. 7 prospect in the state of Mississippi and the country’s No. 174 overall prospect. The Laurel, Miss., native has been committed to Ole Miss since December 2014.
With the Rebels returning tight end Evan Engram for his senior season in 2016, tight end was not a big need for Ole Miss in this recruiting cycle. However, Cooley will have a year to learn coach Hugh Freeze’s offensive system with the help of Engram and be ready to take over the starting job in 2017.
At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Cooley has a similar frame as Engram’s. He’s athletic enough to get some favorable matchups in Ole Miss’ passing game, but also has room to add some weight, which will help him stay on the field for rushing downs.
Cooley also had offers from Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State and Tennessee among others, but he never officially visited any other schools.
