Ole Miss joins a strong field that is still being finalized. Also in the tournament are Cincinnati, Baylor and George Mason — three teams that have developed very good basketball programs and made significant runs in the NCAA Tournament in recent years.
“Having participated in the tournament before, the first season when Ole Miss won the championship, I know Global Sports does as good of a job as anyone when it comes to putting on an event,” Davis said in a release from the school. “This year’s field is outstanding with the likes of Baylor, Cincinnati and George Mason, and I cannot wait to compete against them. We are also looking forward to playing at a destination event that’s close enough for many Ole Miss fans to join us.”
Ole Miss played in and won the tournament in 2014, defeating Cincinnati 66-54 to win the inaugural edition.
The tournament will consist of eight teams playing at The Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Fla.
The other four competing teams will be announced soon, according to the Emerald Coast Classic.
After finishing last season 12-20 overall and last in the SEC, the Rebels will be looking for some good early season momentum in Davis’ first year in charge. He replaced longtime coach Andy Kennedy, who resigned in February. Playing in this tournament shows that Davis will not be shy in his scheduling as the head man in Oxford.
