Ole Miss and coach Matt Luke has added to its coaching staff with the hiring of Jon Sumrall as the Rebels’ new linebackers coach, the school announced on Monday.
“Coach Sumrall became a defensive coordinator at a young age and has led turnarounds on that side of the ball everywhere he has been,” Luke said. “He is a relentless recruiter and gets the very best out of his players. His passion, energy and toughness make him a great fit for our staff, and we can’t wait to get him on campus.”
Sumrall spent the past three seasons as an assistant head coach, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Troy, where he helped coach a defense that finished first in the Sun Belt in several categories. Under his leadership, the Trojans special team unit allowed just 27.71 yards per return, good for second in the nation.
Prior to Troy, Sumrall spent time at Tulane in a co-defensive coordinator role from 2012-14. From 2007-11, he served a variety roles at San Diego, including defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
A three-year player at Kentucky from 2002-04, Sumrall joined the Wildcats as a graduate assistant from 2005-06.
