Ole Miss junior linebacker DeMarquis Gates is ready to elevate his play to the next level in 2016. In his words, he’s expecting a “blowout season.”
Gates led the Rebels with 76 tackles as a sophomore and expects to turn that experience into a stellar junior campaign.
“I just have to take what I learned from last year and make an effort for this year to step it up a little bit,” Gates told Rebels247.com’s David Johnson. Take more upon myself to do more…more tackles, more picks, more everything to help the team win. Hopefully, that can help us take our team to the next level.”
Gates has also taken the reins in a leadership role on the defense, something he said he has embraced during the spring.
“It’s feeling good,” Gates said, according to Johnson. “I got a little more power. You can really control where the team is headed. A lot more responsibility is on you. You’ve got to step up to the plate and be a leader. I like being the leader of the defense.”
It’s been a steady progression for Gates, but 2016 could be the year he officially emerges as the star of Ole Miss’ “LandShark” defense.
