Former Ole Miss legend Archie Manning spoke to reporters Monday for the first time since Hugh Freeze resigned as the Ole Miss head coach on July 20.
Manning told MSNewsNow.com that he considered Freeze a “friend” and that he was “sorry” about what happened at Ole Miss.

Manning was also asked about interim head coach Matt Luke’s chances of succeeding in this role and what he saw as the future of the Rebels’ program.
“I think he’s so well respected by the players, they’re going to play hard for him and the coaches will coach hard for him,” Manning said of Luke. “Matt is going to do a great job for us.”
“He’s been around coaching now for 20 years. He knows you’ve got to go out and play in week one. That’s about all you can do. Then, you tee it up and play in week two. I think that’s the way Matt will approach it.”
Ole Miss opens its season on Sept. 2 against South Alabama.
