INDIANAPOLIS — Robert Nkemdiche came clean at the NFL scouting combine on Friday afternoon, with the exception of one glaring contradiction.
The former Ole Miss defensive lineman said he was “drunk” on the December night he fell from a fourth-floor hotel window in the Atlanta area, but claimed he was not in possession of — or under the influence of — marijuana before his fall.
That doesn’t reconcile with the charge of marijuana possession leveled against him.
When asked about that discrepancy, Nkemdiche said others in his company brought the drugs, and he was forced into the role of scapegoat.
“There were more people in my room,” he said. “The hotel was under my name. Nobody wanted to take the fall, so it happened to be under my name.”
NFL teams are understandably concerned; Nkemdiche, a projected first-round draft pick, said organizations have asked him about the pending charges. But he hopes that his on-field play will allow people to move on from the issue.
“They believe me because it’s the truth and what I’m (going to) keep moving forward with,” he said. “I’m gonna stick to my story. That’s what it is, and I’m gonna keep moving forward and keep being in this moment and get ready to show out on Sunday.”
