INDIANAPOLIS — Robert Nkemdiche’s comments at the NFL combine could have just caused chaos at the top of the upcoming draft.
Focus on his combine press conference focused on Nkemdiche’s off-field concerns, and of course, the infamous hotel incident was brought up in several questions. But perhaps Nkemdiche’s most eyebrow-raising remark came when he said potential No. 1 pick Laremy Tunsil, his Ole Miss teammate was with him.
Tunsil’s presence is important here because Nkemdiche, who was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, said the drugs were not his, which means they could have been Tunsil’s.
“There were more people in my room. The hotel was under my name. Nobody wanted to take the fall, so it happened to be under my name,” Nkemdiche told a group of reporters during Friday’s media session at the NFL combine.
Nkemdiche said there were more people in the room, but the former Rebel only named Tunsil during his press conference. That could be a cause for concern for the Tennessee Titans, who hold the No. 1 pick, as Tunsil is the consensus top projected pick.
Nkemdiche said he was drunk when he fell out of his hotel room and not under the influence of drugs. He has told several NFL teams that the incident is not a true representation of himself, but again deflected blame.
“That was a rash blunder. People that know me know that’s not who I am. I don’t do those kinds of things. The media has done a tarnish to my name,” Nkemdiche said.
When asked to clarify his comment on the media, Nkemdiche said “that was off my mistake.”
