Steve Robertson, a Mississippi State writer for Scout.com, was the first to discover that former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze had been making phone calls to an escort service.
Robertson was doing research for a book, going through Freeze’s phone records from 2016, when a number with a 313 area code caught his attention. Sure enough, after doing a quick Google search of the number, Robertson uncovered the news.
“At first, I had to take a couple of deep breaths,” Robertson said in an interview with ESPN 104.5 in Baton Rouge, La. “I even had my wife kind of double-check me, which is one of the things I never thought I’d ever do is have my wife pull up an escort service ad.”
Robertson then called the number, receiving even more confirmation of what he had found.
“So I call it, and it was difficult to even formulate a sentence,” Robertson told ESPN 104.5. “There is a part of you that is kind of exhilarating, because you’re thinking, ‘This is going to be a really big deal.’ But there’s part of you too that’s really sad.”
Robertson called former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt’s attorney with the news, and the rest is now history.
