Missouri redshirt freshman running back Marquise Doherty has opted to focus primarily on his baseball career.
Coach Barry Odom confirmed on Wednesday that Doherty will transfer to a junior college to play baseball, the Kansas City Star’s Tod Palmer reports.
“I wish him well,” Odom said, according to Palmer. “Since baseball started in January, I really only had a chance to work with him one day. Baseball was really where he wanted to go moving forward, so I hope it works out awesome for him.”
Doherty was drafted in the 15th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals, but opted to commit to Missouri as a two-sport athlete.Doherty redshirted last season with the Tigers football team and batted .214 in 12 games with the baseball team.
He was a three-star recruit from Kansas City and was rated as the No. 5 player in the state of Missouri in the Class of 2015, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
