Josh Augusta is already is becoming a folk hero for media covering the New England Patriots.
The super-sized former Missouri defensive tackle has regaled them with stories of playing wide receiver and other offensive positions as a 320-pound high school player back in the day in high school.
“In my head, I was like, ‘I’m (going to) surprise them. They don’t think I can move.’ So I just surprised them,” Augusta said.
The former Missouri defensive tackle/fullback said he has dropped 43 pounds from his 390-pound playing weight with Tigers by eliminating fast food and late-night eating binges from his diet. He’s also in better shape as he’s gotten his sleep apnea and asthma in check.
“I feel faster,” Augusta said. “My breathing is getting better just because I dropped the weight. So I’m just going to stay on track, and hopefully every still goes right.”’
His athleticism will give him a chance to make the Patriots’ roster. And he might get to play offensively, considering Bill Belichick’s traditional interest in transforming massive defensive players into lead-blocking fullbacks.
Considering his previous history at Missouri, it sounds like a role that Augusta could fill at the next level.
