Though he had a strong finish to the 2016 season, Missouri linebacker Eric Beisel has become more well-known for his words and personality than his play on the field.
Last fall, before the Tigers and the Arkansas Razorbacks played on Black Friday, Beisel told the Hogs that it would “be a mistake” to show up for the game. Despite the fact that Arkansas got out to an early lead, the Tigers came back to win, vindicating Beisel’s trash talk. Beisel has kept the fun going, continuing to poke fun at the Razorbacks during last week’s SEC Media Days.
Needless to say, Beisel’s words have endeared him to a Missouri fan base that hasn’t had a whole lot to cheer about the past couple of seasons, as the Tigers have missed bowl games both years. But the program continues to promote him as one of the faces of the team, as shown in his inclusion for Media Days.
On Sunday, Mizzou football put Beisel front and center once again, but this time with a timely pop culture reference to the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, which returns on Sunday night:

With his fiery red hair and large beard, Beisel displays a more than passing resemblance to Thrones’ character Tormund Giantsbane, and his intense play on the field reflects the recklessness often displayed by that character on the show. Regardless, it’s a clever way for the team to market one of its most marketable players and take advantage of one of the most popular topics of conversation out there right now.
