Surging Missouri gets chance at some burnt-orange revenge
In the immortal words of Mike Leach:
Oh my, my, my.
Surging Missouri — the SEC’s hottest team over the last half of the season — rolled to a 6-0 finish to become bowl eligible, and its reward is a familiar foe: Texas. These former Big 12 colleagues get to face off for the first time since 2011, this time in the Texas Bowl in Houston on Dec. 27.
Missouri won the last meeting, but it’s the war of words coming from Austin that makes this matchup so meaningful. In February 2013, then-Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said this about his program’s struggles:
“Take a school like Missouri. Our bad years are better than their good years.”
After that comment, Missouri reeled off two SEC East titles in a row, came one game away from playing in a national championship game, and has more wins than those vaunted Longhorns.
So, yeah, what do they say about karma, Texas?
Anyway, Missouri held steady in the latest SEC Country Power Poll, checking in at No. 8, based on 20 voters. The Tigers were voted as high as fifth and as low as 10th in the most recent ballots.
Missouri will have one more chance to move up the SEC Country Power Poll, and a win over the Longhorns would be the icing on the cake of what turned out to be a resurgent season. Barry Odom has gone from hot seat to extension talk; Drew Lock — if he returns — should be a Heisman Trophy contender in 2018.
What a time to be alive. Things are arguably looking better in Columbia than they are in Austin.
