On their first play against South Carolina, the Mizzou defense suffered a self-inflicted loss when true freshman linebacker Cale Garrett was ejected for targeting. Gamecock quarterback Jake Bentley had left the pocket on a short gain, but as he attempted to slide, Garrett did not let up, lowering his helmet and hitting Bentley helmet-to-helmet. While Garrett’s hit was not especially malicious, the officials deemed it unnecessary enough to warrant an ejection after review, in addition to a 15-yard penalty.
Missouri, already down senior leaders Michael Scherer and Donavin Newsome, could hardly afford another loss at linebacker, but they’ll have to forgo the rest of the game without their starter in the middle. Stepping in for Garrett is junior Eric Beisel.
