2017 NCAA Tournament Arizona vs Saint Mary’s game preview
Arizona and Saint Mary’s are two of the best West coast basketball programs in the country. The Wildcats have won six in a row and were champions of the Pac-12 Tournament, which featured a pair of No. 3 seeds in Oregon and UCLA. The Wildcats beat them both.
The Wildcats are led by guard Allonzo Trier, who missed the first chunk of the season because of a PED suspension, and forward Lauri Markkanen. Trier rejoined the team in January and made second team All-Pac-12 and was named the Pac-12 Tournament’s most outstanding player. The sophomore guard averaged 17.3 points per game and 5.1 rebounds.
Markkanen is widely regarded as a lottery talent as he averaged 15.7 points per game and 7.1 rebounds. The 7-footer also shots 42.9 percent on his 3-pointers.
As for Saint Mary’s, the Gaels went 28-4 in the regular season, with three of the losses coming to Gonzaga, the No. 1 team in the West Region. St. Mary’s is led by junior center Jock Landale, who averages 16.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
The winner of this matchup takes on the winner of the Florida State-Xavier in the Sweet 16.
