2017 NCAA Tournament Butler vs. Winthrop game preview
Butler is making its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bulldogs enter the event with a 23-8 record, but they’ve lost two consecutive games after winning four straight from Feb. 15-26.
Butler’s most successful run came early in the season, when the Bulldogs started 8-0. That stretch included an impressive victory over then-No. 8 Arizona on Nov. 25. Butler also knocked off then-No. 1 Villanova on Jan. 4, representing the Bulldogs’ best moment to this point.
Kelan Martin leads Butler with 16.1 points per game, and Andrew Chrabascz follows with 11.
Winthrop, meanwhile, is making another NCAA Tournament appearance after a prolonged absence. The Eagles haven’t appeared in the event since 2010, when they lost in the opening round. They’re 26-6 this season and enter on an eight-game winning streak.
Keon Johnson leads Winthrop by averaging 22.5 points per game, and Xavier Cooks follows with 16.3.
It will be interesting to see if Butler can recapture some of its spark from earlier in the season. The Bulldogs will need to be efficient to take care of a hot, confident Winthrop team.
