Target on Villanova’s back
The Wildcats are the defending national champions, and they’re the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Every team they face will give them their absolute best shot, and they’ll have to handle that pressure. They were a No. 2 seed last year but didn’t have the same buzz as teams like Kansas or Oklahoma had coming into the big dance. This time, it may take an even better effort to hoist the trophy at the end of the tournament.
Both of these teams rely heavily on 3-point shooting. Villanova’s leading scorer, Josh Hart, Hits 40.7 percent of his shots from deep. Both teams have multiple players who shoot more than 39 percent from 3-point range. In a single-game elimination situation, one hot (or cold) shooting day can swing things dramatically. If the Wildcats hit from outside at their usual pace, they shouldn’t have a problem. But if the Mountaineers get in a rhythm and Villanova struggles shooting early, things could get interesting for a while.
What role does fatigue play?
Mt. St. Mary’s will be playing for the second time this week after beating New Orleans in its play-in game. Villanova has had more time to rest, but the Wildcats are still coming off a run through the Big East tournament where they played three games in as many days. Don’t be surprised if one or both teams start sluggishly.
