The preseason version of ESPN’s Football Power Index includes multiple SEC teams in its top 10.
To little surprise, the conference is well-represented. Alabama is the highest-rated team at No. 2, followed by Auburn at No. 5 and LSU at No. 6. The SEC is tied with the Big Ten for the most teams within the top 10.
Beyond the SEC teams mentioned, Ohio State is first, followed by Oklahoma at No. 3, Florida State at No. 4 and Clemson at No. 7. Penn State, Washington and Wisconsin round out the top 10.

No SEC teams included within the top 10 is much of a surprise. Alabama is Alabama. But it’s interesting to see Auburn at No. 5 and LSU as high as No. 6.
The upcoming season will be fascinating to follow. The SEC West, in particular, will be competitive and should produce lots of drama. Auburn and LSU could threaten Alabama in the division if both programs have offensive revivals.
We’ll be sure to track these numbers throughout the fall.
