Seven SEC players were named to the annual Biletnikoff Award Watch List for the top pass catcher in the country, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation announced Wednesday.
The list is led by Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk and Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley.
Kirk took the SEC by storm last year as a freshman, catching 80 passes for 1,009 yards and seven touchdowns. He is expected to take an even bigger role in the offense as he gains more experience. He is considered the top receiver in the conference by many.
Those who do not likely consider Ridley that man.
Ridley was equally as strong in his freshman year, catching 89 passes for 1,045 yards and seven touchdowns. Alabama has some quarterback questions, but Ridley will be one of the biggest pass-catching options for whoever wins the job.
It is also telling that Texas A&M and Alabama are the only SEC teams with multiple players on the watch list. Gehrig Dieter of Alabama and Josh Reynolds of Texas A&M. Dieter has not played since 2012 when he was at SMU and Reynolds tallied 907 yards on 51 catches last season in Texas A&M’s wide-open offense.
Also making the watch list is LSU’s Malachi Dupre (43 catches, 698 yards as a sophomore), Arkansas’ Drew Morgan (63 catches for 843 yards in a breakout junior year) and Mississippi State’s Fred Ross (88 catches for 1,007 yards as a junior).
There are no SEC East wide receivers on the preseason watch list.
