Defense is a major key in the SEC. And the conference is loaded with some of the top defensive players in the country.
And nine of them earned recognition for their play.
Jonathan Allen and Reuben Foster of Alabama, Carl Lawson of Auburn, Jarrad Davis of Florida, Tre’davious White and Arden Key of LSU, Derek Barnett of Tennessee, Myles Garrett of Texas A&M and Zach Cunningham of Vanderbilt were all named semifinalists for the Bednarik Award. The award is given to the country’s top defensive player.

The players who were nominated lead the SEC in several defensive categories. Barnett leads the conference with 9.0 sacks, and Key is just behind him with 8.0. Barnett also leads the conference in tackles for loss with 14.5, with Cunningham coming in with 13.5.
The award will be handed out in December. The last SEC player to win the award was Tyrann Mathieu for LSU back in 2011.
