Alabama opens as heavy favorite against Auburn in Iron Bowl
The Iron Bowl is still 12 days away, but some oddsmakers have seen enough to make Alabama a heavy favorite over Auburn.
The Crimson Tide are currently a 14-point favorite (as of 6:30 p.m ET Monday), according to sportsbook.ag.
Auburn (5-5, 2-5 SEC) will likely enter next Saturday’s game as a big underdog regardless of its result against Idaho (3-7) this weekend. No. 2 Alabama (9-1, 6-1) also has a relatively easy matchup against Charleston Southern.
Alabama will enter the Iron Bowl with a chance to make the College Football Playoff, barring a miraculous letdown to Charleston Southern on Saturday. The Crimson Tide could also be playing for an SEC Championship berth depending on the results of this weekend’s games. An Ole Miss loss to LSU on Saturday would make Alabama the SEC West champion prior to the season finale.
Provided the Tigers becomes bowl eligible with a victory over Idaho, they won’t have as much to lose as Alabama. Auburn will likely pull out all the stops to play the role of spoiler to its arch-rival’s title dreams.
There have been many thrilling games in Iron Bowl history, but if Auburn finds a way to beat the odds with an upset, it will be one of the most improbable results in recent memory.
