Every week media members from around the country compile an SEC Power Poll ranking the league’s teams for SECcountry.com. And every week, the media gets its picks wrong. Here is how this week’s poll should have looked.
1. Alabama (Power Poll ranking: 2)
The Crimson Tide didn’t look like the top team in the SEC for much of its game last Saturday, but then it remembered it was playing Tennessee. Alabama owns the Third Saturday in October the way Santa owns Christmas.
2. LSU (Power Poll ranking: 1)
The only thing worse than finding out that bacon may cause cancer is finding out that there is still two weeks to wait to see LSU take on Alabama.
3. Florida (Power Poll ranking: 3)
Florida is riding high as it heads into its yearly showdown with UGA. The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party has been kind to the Gators over the years. Florida fans would probably have fond memories of the games if they were able to actually remember what happened at the games.
4. Ole Miss (Power Poll ranking: 4)
Good news for Ole Miss: It is still in the driver’s seat in the SEC West and it just got Laremy Tunsil back. Of course the irony of that is that one of the reasons the Rebels have two losses is because Tunsil got caught spending a little too much time in a driver’s seat.
5. UGA (Power Poll ranking: 6)
This week Mark Richt denied having interest in the vacant Miami coaching job. Many dissatisfied UGA fans are encouraging him to reconsider.
6. Texas A&M (Power Poll ranking: 7)
What has happened to Kevin Sumlin? We haven’t seen stock fall in the state of Texas like this since Enron.
7. Mississippi State (Power Poll ranking: 5)
Mississippi State should rank below Texas A&M because it lost to the Aggies and because the Bulldogs’ collection of wins this season is less impressive than John Travolta’s collection of hair pieces.
8. Arkansas (Power Poll ranking: 8)
Arkansas should try to figure out a way to play Toledo a little less and Auburn a little more.
9. Auburn (Power Poll ranking: 10)
Gus Malzahn spent $1.6 million on Will Muschamp. I hope he saved the receipt.
10. Tennessee (Power Poll ranking: 9)
The hype surrounding Tennessee at the beginning of the season was a little like the new Star Wars trailer. It was really loud, it got a lot of attention, and it was over in about two minutes.
11. Kentucky (Power Poll ranking: 11)
New rule: No football program should have more uniform combinations than it has conference wins.
12. South Carolina (Power Poll ranking: 12)
Let’s be honest, most of us stopped caring about South Carolina football around the same time Steve Spurrier did.
13. Vanderbilt (Power Poll ranking: 13)
On the bright side, Vanderbilt has a pretty good defense. However, the Commodores offense couldn’t find the end zone with a map.
14. Missouri (Power Poll: 14)
Rumor has it that Missouri’s football games have gotten so boring that instead of being televised on ESPN they will now be shown on C-SPAN.
