Alabama is certainly trying to send a message to Clemson. But the Crimson Tide might be getting some benefit from the officials as there were two questionable hits in the first quarter.
The first came on Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson via linebacker Reuben Foster. The Alabama linebacker was flagged for a late hit on the play, but it certainly looked like a shot to the head.

The second questionable hit received no penalty but was just as violent. Alabama DB Tony Brown came in late and delivered a shot to the head of Clemson WR Mike Williams, who had to leave the game after the hit.

The defense did keep Clemson off the scoreboard in the first quarter, as the Crimson Tide held a 7-0 edge after 15 minutes, thanks to Bo Scarbrough’s touchdown.
