Kirby Smart will officially be announced as Georgia’s new coach on Monday, and the former Alabama defensive coordinator will have already secured a victory prior to taking the podium.
Five-star linebacker Ben Davis of Gordo, Ala., revealed a list of top schools on Monday morning, and the Bulldogs — likely to Smart’s credit — lead, Davis confirmed to SEC Country.
UGA is followed behind by Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame and Auburn, in that particular order.
The news comes as somewhat of a surprise. Davis, whose father, Wayne, is Alabama’s all-time leading tackler, is considered an overwhelming favorite to sign with the Crimson Tide in the coming weeks, per 247Sports.com’s Crystal Ball predictions. That is not to say Alabama no longer has a fair chance to land his services, but it’s clear Smart’s departure from his post in Tuscaloosa was enough for Davis to label the Bulldogs his outright leader.
“He’s a great coach,” Davis said of Smart in a recent interview. “If he goes there, that will be good for him and for Georgia. Like I said, whoever goes there, it’s not going to hurt how I look at Georgia. They’re still going to be one of my top schools. Right now, they’re definitely in my top three or four. Whatever happens, I’m going to still consider them.”
At 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, Davis is rated as the top inside linebacker in the country, per 247Sports.com.
