Alabama’s Ryan Kelly and Auburn’s Shon Coleman will have more at stake than draft stock in Indianapolis next week.
The players are raising money for wounded members of the armed forces by soliciting pledges from fans, with each of Kelly’s and Coleman’s bench press repetitions at the NFL scouting combine counting toward the proceeds.
AL.com’s Brandon Marcello reports that proceeds will go to the Eagle Fund, “which raises money to support special operations forces personnel to receive rehabilitation and training services.”
Kelly, this past year’s Rimington Trophy winner, started three full seasons at center for the Crimson Tide. He went 1-1 against Auburn when Coleman — a left tackle — was in the starting lineup.
Both players earned academic honors during their SEC careers. Coleman was diagnosed with leukemia in spring 2010, went through treatment and did not play in a varsity game until 2013. He was a second-team All-SEC selection this past year.
