Throughout the 2016 football season, the “experts” at ESPN’s GameDay and the SEC Network’s SEC Nation weighed in each Saturday with their predictions as to who will win the day’s contests.
We don’t always agree, but the picks — along with Lee Corso’s headgear selection — have replaced cartoons as our preferred Saturday morning programming. For the most part though, cartoons are still great.
But do the experts deserve their title? To find out, we dissected their selections from throughout the entire season to see who is the best of the best.
Corso is the king for a reason. His headgear unveiling has been a GameDay staple for 20 years, and he knows a thing or two about football, as well (kinda, we’ll get to that below).
Corso is the winner of GameDay’s predictions, correctly guessing on 68 percent of the 139 picks he made this year. Corso also had the best individual Saturday among the panel, going 10-1 in Week 2.
When it comes to Corso’s signature headgear selection, the former Florida State quarterback went 9-4 when it came to picking the winning mascot. Among his four misses, however, were some notable SEC contests, including: Wisconsin over LSU, Alabama over LSU and Tennessee over Florida.
GameDay Season Standings
- Lee Corso, 94-45 (68 percent)
- Kirk Herbstreit, 82-44 (65 percent)*
- Desmond Howard, 86-53 (62 percent)

GAMEDAY SUPER DOGS
You might want to follow Corso’s advice when it comes to picking winners. But in selecting Super Dogs — teams that pull upset, underdog victories — Corso is the last person you want to ask for advice. Sunshine Scooter didn’t correctly predict a Super Dog until Week 13, before hitting on his last two upset picks of the year: California over UCLA and Georgia Southern over Troy, respectively.
Rece Davis, it should be noted, nailed Vanderbilt’s victories over Ole Miss and Tennessee to pull even with Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard at 4-9 for the year.
Super Dog Standings
- Kirk Herbstreit 4-9
- Desmond Howard 4-9
- Rece Davis 4-9
- Lee Corso 2-11
Another big draw to GameDay is the locally-tied celebrity that ESPN trots out each week. Two comedians took top billing this year as Keegan Michael-Key edged out Frank Caliendo for the 2016 celebrity picker title.
- Keegan Michael-Key 8-1
- Frank Caliendo 8-2
- Aaron Rodgers 7-2
- Eric Church 7-2
- Lil’ Wayne 6-3
- Greg Jennings 7-2
- Orlando Pace 7-3
- Joel McHale 7-4
- Ric Flair 6-4
- Dale Earnhardt Jr. 6-5
- Steve Spurrier 6-5*
- Philip Fulmer 6-5*
- Laila Ali 5-4
- Verne Lundquist 4-4
- The Chainsmokers 4-5
Marcus Spears is your season champ when it comes to predicting SEC results, clocking in with an impressive 76 percent accuracy. The tip of the hat goes to the former LSU defensive end for his Week 13 performance, in which he went 7-0.
To accomplish the feat, Spears correctly predicted Georgia Tech over Georgia, Mississippi State over Ole Miss, Vanderbilt over Tennessee, and, lest we forget the biggest of them all, Kentucky over Louisville.
SEC Nation final standings
- Marcus Spears, 50-16 (76 percent)
- Paul Finebaum, 48-18 (73 percent)
- Tim Tebow, 44-22 (67 percent)
