Beth Mowins will make history this year, becoming the first woman to call a nationally televised NFL game.
ESPN announced Tuesday that Mowins would do play-by-play for the Monday Night Football game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos in Week 1. She will be joined in the booth by former Buffalo Bills and New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who will provide color commentary.
“This is an amazing opportunity and I look forward to working with Rex and our entire ESPN team,” Mowins said. “As lifelong fans of the NFL Monday Night Football franchise, we want to bring the same passion to the broadcast as our predecessors have all done.”
Mowins will be the first woman to do play-by-play for an NFL game on television since Gayle Sierens did a regional broadcast of Seahawks-Chiefs in 1987.
She has worked at ESPN since 1994. She has covered basketball, softball, soccer and volleyball for ESPN, and has gotten a larger role in the network’s college football coverage in recent years.
